How Radon Enters A HomeRadon gas is a class A carcinogen and is a colorless and odorless gas released into the ground as a result of uranium decay in the soil. This invisible gas can be hazardous to your health when your in an enclosed structure. Most real estate contracts allow you to test for the presence of radon gas and if the radon level is 4.0 pCi/L or above, you may ask for remediation of this condition or decline to purchase the home.

Prior to 1991, radon fans were permitted within the living space of dwelling. After 1991, all radon fans were required to be outside the living space; either in the attic or on the exterior of home.

The NJ DEP (New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection) has new established guidelines and regulations stating that testing should be done at the lowest livable level of the home. It no longer recommends that a follow up test be done if initial test results are 4.0 pCi/L or higher. The home should be mitigated.

Radon remediation systems typically cost $1200 to $1600 and radon is one of the easiest, and least costly environmental hazards to correct.
